HMRC takes multiple tax payments in error

Up to a thousand people had multiple tax charges taken out of their accounts on self-assessment deadline day last week because of a technical glitch.

Customers paying online through the BillPay system, managed by Santander Corporate Banking, had their tax bill debited twice from their bank accounts

The problem affected customers paying online through the BillPay system, managed by Santander Corporate Banking.

The error sent one victim, Colin Jones, spiralling into his overdraft with no idea when his money would be returned.

Mr Jones, 59, an insurance broker from Leicestershire, had almost £20,000 taken from his account after his tax bill was charged twice.

Mr Jones tried calling the tax office numerous times over the following days.

When he got through, he was told HMRC was aware of the problem but that there were no updates available. He had to ask his bank to increase his overdraft limit to cover the costs.
